A Little History About your Hosts
Paul and Pauline married in November 1996. We moved to Ormond in May 1999. Our first impression of the property was not to even look at the house as the grounds were such a mess. The land was being cropped and was a messy ploughed paddock. We told the land agent to drive straight out as we were not interested in even looking at such a messy place.
Once back home in town all we could do was talk about the property and decided to come back and look at it with a more open mind.
We now believe this was God leading us. We fell in love with the home and decided this was the place for us even before looking all the way through the house. Once we had moved and consulted with farm advisers we decided to plant mandarins. We planted a total of 6,600 trees over a period of 2 years and the Orchard was born.
In 2000 we developed the cottage. It was an old building that had a couple of rooms and was not being used for anything except gathering dust. We drew plans and had a builder do the building side and we painted and did all the rest after work. We had many hours of enjoyment as we developed the cottage.
In 2002 Pauline decided to start breeding Burmese cats. We had to come up with a prefix for our breeding cattery. After a lot of thought we decided to submit Easternstar as one of our choices for the prefix with New Zealand Cat Fancy. This was accepted much to our joy.
Easternstar is more than a name. We chose the Eastern part of the name as we live in Gisborne on the East coast. The star part of the name came from Pauline's first stud cat named Star, but this is not the only reason. When Jesus was born the Shepherds saw the bright star in the East, which lead them to the Christ Child. As Christians this holds quite a significance for us.
Easternstar then became the name of our Property and later the Boarding Cattery. Hence we now have Easternstar Orchard, Easternstar Hide-A-Way Cottage, and Easternstar Boarding Cattery. We have given up breeding Burmese and although we miss all the lovely kittens we do have the boarding cats and our own two house cats.
